Bike Manhattan

Cycling is closely associated with New York, and it has been for several decades. For some of us cycling is a relaxing activity for the weekend, for others it provides much needed exercise, while some simply refuse to commute to work using any other form of transport.

New York City has a wide range of specialized bicycle shops, and the staff are usually well informed and helpful. Before you hit the street on your two-wheeled friend, make sure you know the NYC Traffic Rules and Regulations and get yourself a copy of the NYC cycling map, available from any bike shop across the city.

The stats have shown that commuter cycling has been on the increase in New York, with an estimated 35% increase from year 2007/2008. Whether for environmental or practical reasons, cycling levels doubled in the last 6 years.

Cycling Events and Initiatives

Since May is the Bike Month in New York City, there is a National Bike to Work Day included in the events calendar – this year it’s on May 15th. You can browse the website to find cycling events in your local area (Bronx, Queens or Manhattan) or to join the ever-expanding cycling community.

The Blessing of the Bikes is a fun event for all cycling-lovers (and those on skates and non-motorized scooters!) and takes place each year at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York. It’s free, aimed at people of all faiths and each year it draws more and more cyclists.

Recycle-A-Bicycle is a youth training and environmental initiative that promotes everyday bike use, and spreads the word among New York’s youth.

If cycling means pleasure rather than the commuting necessity, why not try one of Central Park’s Bike Tours. Rent a bike for an hour or all day and discover New York.

Find the closest bicycle shop in New York where you will be able to get general information on bike maintenance, help with choosing the right bike and tips on keeping your bike secure and safe.
